How a Water Softener Works

Water softeners utilize a process called “ion exchange” to remove dissolved hard water minerals such as calcium, magnesium, iron, and manganese. Here’s a step-by-step explanation of how it works:

01

Resin Beads

Inside the water softener, there are resin beads that are coated with sodium ions.

02

Inlet Water

Hard water enters the water softener through the inlet pipe and passes through the resin bed.

03

Ion Exchange

As the hard water flows through the resin bed, the hard water minerals (calcium, magnesium, etc.) are attracted to the resin beads, and the sodium ions are released into the water in exchange.

04

Softened Water

After the ion exchange process, the water that comes out of the water softener is now softened, meaning it has a reduced concentration of hard water minerals.

05

Regeneration

Over time, the resin beads become saturated with the hard water minerals and need to be regenerated. This is done by flushing a brine solution (a concentrated saltwater solution) through the resin bed, which displaces the hard water minerals from the resin beads and replaces them with sodium ions.

06

Discharge

The brine solution, along with the displaced hard water minerals, is flushed out of the water softener through the discharge pipe.

07

Softened Water Supply

Once the regeneration process is complete, the water softener is ready to continue supplying softened water to your home.

By removing the hard water minerals through ion exchange, water softeners help prevent limescale buildup, protect plumbing and appliances, and provide a range of other benefits associated with soft water.

Understanding water softening and its benefits

Water softening utilizes a process called “ion exchange” to remove dissolved hard water minerals like calcium, magnesium, iron, and manganese. Unlike filters, which cannot trap these minerals, water softeners use resin beads to hold onto sodium. As hard water flows through the resin, the sodium swaps places with the hard water minerals, effectively softening the water.

Commonly asked questions

Hard water is a common issue, with over 85% of the water supply in North America being affected. It contains dissolved minerals like calcium and magnesium, which can cause limescale buildup, plumbing corrosion, streaky dishes, and stiff laundry, among other problems. The level of hardness is categorized as soft, slightly hard, moderately hard, hard, or very hard based on the concentration of minerals.

For most people, drinking softened water is safe. While the softening process adds a small amount of sodium to the water, it is generally low enough to not pose any health risks. However, if you have concerns about sodium levels, combining your water softener with a reverse osmosis drinking water system can further reduce salt and potentially harmful contaminants.

To ensure peak performance, regular maintenance is required for water softeners. Having your local Culligan Water expert perform an annual inspection can extend the lifespan of your water softener and potentially reduce future repair costs. This inspection includes water testing to identify any other contaminants that may impact operation. Culligan Water also offers scheduled salt delivery service to save you the hassle of transporting heavy bags.

The size or capacity of a water softener refers to its ability to handle water before regeneration is necessary. The right size/capacity depends on factors such as the hardness of your water, the service capacity from your water supply, and your typical household water usage. Consulting with your local Culligan Water expert will ensure you select the correct size for optimal water quality and efficiency.
